A full denture is a removable appliance replacing all the natural teeth and the associated tissues and is supported by the gums. These dentures fit in the mouth, with suction retention to the soft tissue/ gums. Dentures can help patients’ numerous ways. These include:
Mastication – chewing ability is improved by replacing edentulous areas with denture teeth.
Aesthetics – the presence of teeth provides a natural facial appearance and wearing a denture to replace missing teeth provides support for the lips and cheeks and corrects the collapsed appearance that occurs after losing teeth.
Self-Esteem – Patients feel better about themselves
Full dentures can also be retained by implants for better stability and function.
Partial dentures are designed to replace the missing dentition sections, to help preserve natural dental placement and prevent the existing healthy natural teeth from migrating to a different position.
Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. Partial dentures work by using the remaining teeth for retention, thus retaining, and stabilising the denture so that it doesn’t move or fall.
Partial dentures can be fabricated in a few different materials; the most common materials being either Acrylic or Chrome. I can also make Flexible partial dentures.
Acrylic dentures are usually the most cost effective and can be made within a short period of time. Other advantages are that they can be relined, added to (in case you lose any more natural teeth) and can be used as a temporary denture before dental implants.
Some of the disadvantages are that the acrylic denture base is slightly weaker due to its irregular shape and tends to break more frequently, especially those made for the lower arch. To counteract this, the acrylic is usually thicker, which can take a little extra time to get used to.
Chrome dentures are more a long-term material for a partial denture, as the frame and required components are all cast in one piece. The components of a chrome partial denture rest on soft tissue and natural teeth, making the denture both tooth and tissue borne, thus distributing the load evenly when chewing, helping to protect the underlying bone.
Due to the strength of the chrome, it can be made in a smaller, more efficient design, making it more comfortable to wear and live with, whilst giving you the security of knowing it has less chance of breakage.
Flexible partial dentures are made from flexible plastic material which fits neatly into your mouth. It is virtually invisible due to having no metal clasp to cover your natural teeth. Due to the flexible material this allows the patient’s natural gum tissue colour to appear through the denture, therefore allowing the flexible denture to become invisible to the human eye.
Immediate dentures are designed to be fitted immediately following tooth extraction. They are usually a temporary solution to fill in the gaps until you are ready for the next stage of your treatment. They not only help to avoid the embarrassment of missing teeth but also help in the healing process of your gums.
I work in conjunction with our local dentists to provide immediate dentures as part of their treatment planning until the patient is ready for a more permanent solution.

If your dentures aren’t fitting as well as they used to, then a professional denture reline at Dentures by Design NZ can provide the perfect solution. No matter how tough your dentures are, it is very common that over time they become loose or ill-fitting due to gum resorption.
A denture reline involves adding new dental material to the base of the denture so that it fits as well as it did when you first got it.
There are two types of denture reline service at Dentures by Design NZ:
Acrylic is used for the hard reline, which is a harder material. Acrylic relines last longer than soft relines and usually require fewer adjustments.
This type of relining uses a soft flexible dental material to adjust the fit of the dentures to your gums. Soft materials are more comfortable for patients and results in less sore spots and a shorter period to get used to the fit of their denture.
Unfortunately, accidents can happen at any time but when an accident involves your dentures it can be difficult. For this reason, I offer a denture repair service to make sure that you can have your dentures repaired as fast as possible.
